About Thurso Bay Beach

Thurso Bay, known also as Scrabster Bay, is located between Clairdon Head and Holborn Head on the north coast of Caithness, in Scotland. The bay receives water from the River Thurso and the Wolf Burn. The river mouth, which was a busy commercial port during the 19th century, serves now as a small harbour.

The beach is a fine stretch of sand, easily accessible, in the middle of the town of Thurso. It is a mostly sandy beach, with some rockier sections. Being exposed to the big Atlantic swells, the bay, particularly the eastern end, can produce some of the best waves for surfing in the entire United Kingdom. Parking is available along Pentland Crescent, including disabled parking.  From Scrabster Harbour, about a mile to the north west of the beach, visitors can travel by ferry to the Orkney Islands.
