It is an earth-work dam supplied by Talla Water, an affluent of the Tweed. There is an amazing little bridge nearby, and although it is about half a mile from the reservoir, the downward sight is great. The reservoir is an important item of the water supply for Edinburgh. Its maximum length is about 12.1 km (2.5 mi) and the maximum depth (close to the dam) is about 24.4 m (80 feet).
