About Rudyard Lake

A reservoir originally built in the 1700s, Rudyard Lake stretches 4 km (2.5 mi) in length and features an 8 km (5 mi) walk around its shores. People visit for boating and sailing (canoes and boat hire are available). Fishing is nationally renowned, with roach, perch, bream, carp and pike being the most common catches. Day passes are available. A steam railway runs alongside the lake, with services operating most weekends and weekdays during the summer months. Wildlife photographers and bird watchers will appreciate the wealth of bird life, both resident and visiting species, including Canada Geese, other wading birds and an osprey (June to September).
