About Portstewart Beach

Portstewart Strand is a beach in Portstewart, County Londonderry in Northern Ireland. It is two miles long and ends at the Barmouth of the River Bann, overlooking Castlerock. It is one of the top ten visitor attractions in Northern Ireland and has been awarded a Blue Flag, a European certification indicating high environmental and quality standards.

Flora and Fauna

Portstewart Strand is included in the Bann Estuary Area of Special Scientific Interest, because of the many rare and fragile habitats and wildlife that are supported here. Wildflowers such as the Pyramidal orchid, the Northern marsh orchid, Birdsfoot trefoil and wild thyme attract many species of butterflies and moths. Seals breed in the area and basking sharks, dolphins and porpoises visit from time to time.

Activities

Visitors can enjoy walking, swimming, kite surfing, wind surfing, and other water sports in the sea. The North Antrim Coast Path, a 64 km (40 mile) walk which leads to Murlough Bay and forms part of the longer Ulster Way, begins at Portstewart Strand. Visitors can follow nature trails, picnic, or take long walks in the sand dunes.
