About Bamburgh Castle Beach

Bamburgh Castle Beach is a sandy beach located on the coast of Northumberland, England. It was awarded the Blue Flag rural beach award in 2005; and is a Marine Conservation Society Recommended beach. It stands within the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Flora and Fauna

There have been occasional sightings of seals and dolphins, but more common wildlife includes elder ducks, curlews, oyster catcher and wading birds. 

Activities

From the beach itself, there is access to fishing, windsurfing, surfing and swimming, as well as views of Bamburgh Castle (seat of the former Kings of Northumbria), which is open to members of the public throughout the year. Visitors can also enjoy cycling, walking and bird watching in the surrounding area.  There is a museum dedicated to the achievements of Grace Darling, a local heroine, and the seafaring history of the region, maintained by the RNLI Heritage Trust. The Bamburgh Dunes, which are an area of sand dunes designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest, stand behind the beach.

How to get there

The beach is well-signposted and easily accessible from the A1; and by rail from Almouth and Berwick stations.
