About Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
The Surrey Hills AONB covers 422 sq km (163 sq mi) of chalk grasslands, heathlands and deciduous woodland which span Surrey in south east England. Designated in 1958, the Hills AONB stretches across a quarter of the county and includes the chalk slopes of the North Downs from Farnham in the west to Oxted in the east; and extends south to the densely wooded Greensand Hills which rise in Haslemere.
About Box Hill Country Park
Box Hill Country Park is National Trust owned and managed and lies within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is also part of a wider Site of Special Scientific Interest because of the rare wildlife and plants to be found here, which includes the Adonis blue butterfly and bee orchid.
Distance: ~6 miles (~10 km)
Terrain: Undulating, uneven and challenging, with uphill sections. Some road walking along pavements is also involved. Several paths are likely to be muddy.
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
IMPORTANT! (There are 275 steps from Stepping Stones to Box Hill top)
Time: 3-4 hours.
• Food / Sandwiches / Protein Bars / Fruits
• 2 litres of water
• Walking boots or other suitable footwear (some paths are muddy)
• A spare pair of shoes (to wear in train/car)
• Waterproof clothing (Welcome to London)
• Long trousers (avoid shorts!) - some areas have overgrown stinging nettle
• Sunglasses (fingers crossed for sunny days!)
• Sun cream (...being optimistic here)
• Money for drinks / food at the pub
HOW TO GET THERE
We will meet at Box Hill & Westhumble Station (Southern Rail), which is around 1 hour ride from Waterloo station. Tickets cost £11.70 return.
You can book your tickets online or buy them from Waterloo station.
There is a 09:02am train leaving from Waterloo, and you'll arrive at 10:06am to Box Hill, just in time to meet us.

For those who plan to drive, parking is free at Box Hill & Westhumble station. There are limited spaces though.
